Privacy Policy
Last updated: 10 September 2026
This policy explains what information the MataSelam mobile app and its supporting services collect, how that information is used, and the choices you have. MataSelam is operated by Evolutionary Software Design LLC (“we”, “us”), a Wyoming, USA limited liability company.
The short version
- You can use the core app — identifying species and browsing the catalogue — without an account and without an internet connection. Identification runs on your device; your photos are not uploaded for that.
- We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use third-party advertising or tracking networks.
- If you create an account, we store the dive logs, sightings, and corrections you choose to save so they sync across your devices.
- Photos and corrections you submit may be used to improve the species-identification model.
Information we collect
Account information
Using the app as a guest does not require an account. If you create one, we collect your email address and a securely hashed password. If you sign in through Apple or another provider, we receive the identifier and email address that provider shares with us.
Content you create
When you are signed in, we store the content you choose to save, which may include:
- Dive sessions and their details (date, location or region, site name, depth, duration, conditions, and similar fields you enter or import).
- Species sightings, including any photo you attach to a sighting and any notes you add.
- Misidentification corrections — when you tell us the app got a species wrong, we store the photo, the app’s original prediction, and the species you selected as correct.
- Your life list, preferences, and app settings.
Diagnostics and usage
We use Sentry to collect crash reports and error diagnostics, which may include device model, operating-system version, and app state at the time of an error. We also record basic in-app events (for example, that an identification was run in a particular dive region) to understand how the app is used and where to improve coverage. These usage events are associated with a region, not with your name or email.
Purchases
Subscriptions and purchases are processed by the Apple App Store and by our payments provider, RevenueCat. We receive confirmation of your subscription status and entitlements. We do not receive or store your payment-card details.
How we use information
- To provide the app: authenticating you, syncing your data across devices, and delivering catalogue and model updates.
- To improve species identification: photos and corrections you submit are used as training and evaluation data for future versions of the model.
- To contribute to a site’s confirmed-species records, which help other users know what has been seen at a dive site.
- To diagnose crashes and fix problems.
- To communicate with you about your account or important changes to the service.
Optional sharing to iNaturalist
The app includes an optional feature to share an identification to your own iNaturalist account. This is off by default. It only happens for observations you explicitly choose to share, after you connect your iNaturalist account. If you use it, the photo and associated data are sent to iNaturalist and are then governed by iNaturalist’s own privacy policy.
How information is shared
We share information only in these circumstances:
- Service providers that operate parts of the service on our behalf — cloud hosting and storage (including Google Cloud Platform), error monitoring (Sentry), and subscription management (RevenueCat) — under agreements that limit their use of the data to providing those services.
- iNaturalist, only when you use the optional sharing feature described above.
- Aggregated or de-identified data — for example, species-occurrence counts by dive site or region — which cannot reasonably be used to identify you.
- Legal reasons — if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of our users or of us.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it with advertising networks.
Data retention and account deletion
We keep your account information and content for as long as your account is active. You can delete your account from within the app or by emailing us. When you delete your account, we remove your profile and disassociate your saved content from your identity.
Sightings and their photos may be retained after account deletion in de-identified form — without your account identifier — because they form part of dive-site species records and of the dataset used to improve the identification model. Crash diagnostics are retained on a rolling basis by Sentry and age out automatically.
Storage and international transfer
Our servers and cloud storage are located in the United States. If you use the app from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to and processed there.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information, and to withdraw consent you have given. You can exercise most of these directly in the app, or contact us at the address below and we will respond within the time required by applicable law.
Children
MataSelam is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
