Identify
Point the camera at a fish, nudibranch, ray or turtle and get the most likely species, with close matches to compare. The recognition model runs entirely on your phone.
Browse
A reference catalogue of nearly 5,000 Indo-Pacific species — names in 13 languages, photos, and which dive regions each one turns up in.
Remember
Log each dive and build a life list of everything you’ve seen. Import existing dives from your dive computer or logbook app.

Designed around real conditions on a dive trip — patchy connectivity, a phone in a housing, a group comparing notes on the ride home.
- Works offline. The species catalogue and the identification model are built into the app. No signal required.
- On-device recognition. Photos are identified locally on your phone, not uploaded to be processed.
- Indo-Pacific coverage. Bali, Raja Ampat, Sipadan & Mabul, and other regions across the biome, expanding over time.
- Multilingual. Common names in 13 languages, including Indonesian, Filipino, Japanese, Thai and more.
- Dive log. Record dives and sightings, or import from a UDDF export.
- Gets better with use. When you correct a wrong identification, that feedback improves future versions of the model.
About
MataSelam is a project of Evolutionary Software Design LLC, a Wyoming company. Development is based partly in Bali, Indonesia, working with local dive operators to build the reference catalogue and improve species coverage.
The name is Indonesian — mata selam, “diving eye.” The goal is a field guide that fits in your pocket, works where the reef is, and helps divers and snorkelers pay closer attention to what they’re looking at.
